By optimizing the phone, this app also stops energy drain so your battery charge will last longer. The AppLock feature also keeps your data secure from prying eyes and thieves.

2)  Uber Never again be stuck without a ride. This app is free but of course the ride isn’t. Use the app to summon a driver to pick you up wherever you may be. It will show you a fare quote on various ride options in advance of booking so you know what the charges for the ride will be. It will also show you a picture of the car and driver and let you know when your ride will arrive. It’s a great way to get around without having to try and hail a cab, and the fare is often cheaper too.

3)  DU Battery Saver丨Power Doctor This app has one function – to make your device battery last up to 50% longer. It does that by protecting against poor charging habits, battery hogging apps, and overlooked device settings that drain your battery. Tip: Charge your battery when it’s less than 20% and let it fully charge but disconnect it from the charger immediately when done.

4)  Facebook Messenger This app enables you to make free calls, even international ones, and record voice messages, do group chats and easily send photos and videos to anyone, not just your Facebook friends. The Chat Heads feature is a bit annoying but you can turn that feature off if you want. Some will find Chat Heads a useful feature to use while you’re in other apps, so there’s that.

5)  Netflix The app is free but the subscription service isn’t meaning you need to be a subscriber to Netflix to use this free app. Still, it’s useful for entertainment while you’re on the move and stuck with lengthy downtimes. And, if you carry a Chromecast with you on your travels or you’ve cut the cord on cable and satellite TV at home, you can “cast” the TV show or movie from your mobile device to a television to enjoy it on a bigger screen.

6)  Chromecast Speaking of which, if you want to use the Chromecast device on a television, you’ll need this mobile app in order to do so. Incredibly easy to set up and use, this app allows you to cast anything from your mobile device to a television.

7)  Skype - free IM & video calls This is a great app for video calls but watch how much you use it as overuse can negatively affect your data plan. Still, it’s a great way to communicate with your family while away and to share documents and other things with co-workers remotely.

8)  Pandora Radio This app is great for listening to music tailored to your tastes. It uses machine learning to discover new music that you’re likely to like and play it for you to up or down vote. This way you can listen to your old favorites and find new ones with little effort.

9) Snapchat Want to send a message or photo to someone but don’t want it to stay on their device as a permanent record? Snapchat is the app for you. Just send it and shortly after the recipient sees it, the message is automatically deleted.

10) Instagram This is a great photo and video editing app with free custom-designed filters. Show your friends, family, co-workers and the world what you see and view what they see. You can also share your work on Instagram on other social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.

12)  Amazon Shopping This free app is a good addition for those times when you need to order something quickly while you’re on the run. Maybe you forgot an anniversary or need to send a client a ift while you’re traveling. Don’t feel beholden to always shopping on Amazon, but for the times when you need to order something fast, and have it delivered anywhere hassle free, this is a good fall-back app to have.

13)  Yelp This is a great app to help you find nearby restaurants, shops and services and see user comments too so you can make great choices. It’s like having a local guide – anywhere you may go.

14) Dropbox  This app enables you to store anything in the cloud so that you can access it from any device. So, all those photos, notes and documents on your mobile device – newly created or adapted – are there for you on any device. Plus, if your device is stolen, your content is still available.

15) Pinterest This app is a visual bookmarking tool. Use it to make a visual reminder of something you want to buy, somewhere you want to visit or did visit, or anything you enjoy and want to share privately or publicly. Save anything on the Web you want to refer to later too.

18)  Google Translate Obviously this app can be a great help when travelling abroad but it can be useful at home too – like when you’re reading ethnic or foreign-based restaurant menus and need a little clarification. It’s always good to be able to communicate so why not have a translator at the ready?

20)  YouTube Kids Got restless munchkins on your hands?  This app will keep them entertained but you can rest easy that the entertainment is all age appropriate. You can even turn off search to further limit what they can view.

21) LinkedIn Most people think of LinkedIn only as a professional network tool and resume service, and it is. But it’s also useful if you’re meeting with a client and want to learn more about the firm first. Use advanced search features to find any information you need on a company or the company personnel you’re scheduled to meet. Also, if you are meeting a new client or customer somewhere, a quick LinkedIn check can show you their picture so you can recognize them in the crowd immediately. Think of it is a great people and company information tool.

22)  HBO GO Not all the great TV shows are available on Netflix, so if you are a big Game of Thrones fan, or a fan of other HBO original shows, this app is for you. This app is free but you have to be an HBO subscriber to use it. Also, check with your cable TV company to see if they offer HBO GO. Some don’t offer a hookup with HBO GO, even though they sell subscriptions to HBO.

23) Duolingo: Learn Languages Free Rather make smarter use of your downtime than play a game or watch a video? Use this app to learn a new language. Languages offered are Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, Irish, Danish, and Swedish. Best of all, the language lessons are easy to follow and make learning fun.

26) Amazon Kindle Prefer to read books rather than listen to them? This app can summon books and magazines as well as offer several auxiliary services such as a built-in dictionary and Google search engine. You can also sample books before you buy them.

27)  Inbox by Gmail This is a free app but it’s currently available by invitation only. When you use this app, you still have regular Gmail to fall back on if you wish, but you probably aren’t going to wish for any such thing. Similar messages are grouped in bundles making it easier to find the important stuff and cull the meaningless stuff in one easy swipe. And, emails are presented in card format so you can see messages and photos without bothering to actually open the email. See everything in a glance and click to open an email if you want to see more.

It’s a very efficient way to arrange for entertainment for family, friends, and clients with little effort – and to get your money back, essentially, if something happens that you can’t make the event after all.

29)  Fandango Movies If you would rather catch a movie than go to an event, then this app, rather StubHub, is for you. Doesn’t matter what city you’re in, this app can find all the movie theaters in the area, show you what movies are playing and when, and let sell you the ticket too. Yes, that’s right, you’ll never have to stand in line to buy a movie ticket again.

33) Police Scanner Radio Scanner Hear sirens and want to know what’s happening around you? Or maybe you are a police/crime buff and want to hear what’s happening now anywhere in the world? This app is for you then. It doesn’t deliver scanner reports from every police department, so you might want to check the list to see if the area you’re interested in is there. But overall, it’s an interesting, albeit hair-raising, experience and at least you’ll know whether to bar the door and duck or flee to safety.

34) Google Wallet This app makes it easy to pay in stores, online or even pay your friends for your share of the tab. It also helps secure your banking and credit card information. IT will also alert you to nearby loyalty programs and other money saving programs, if you wish.

35) Lookout Security & Antivirus One of the best security apps available, this one will protect your device from malware and also locate it if it’s lost or stolen. Thieves will get nothing as the app can lock down your device, wipe your data, and even sound a shrill alert to tell on the thief (or the device gobbling sofa cushion). It also automatically backs up your data so you’re sure to lose nothing.
