Overcast, the long-awaited podcast app, finally made its debut. Now, over a year later, the app is at version 2.0 with plenty of great new additions.
With the update to version 2.0, which is now available in the iOS App Store, users are no longer forced to download podcasts that they want to listen to. Instead, the app now supports streaming, which means you’ll just be able to start a podcast and start listening, no download necessary.
The update also includes chapter markings for podcasts, as long as the podcaster has included the metadata for such a feature to work with. If you tap on a chapter title it will jump you immediately to that specific time in the podcast.
There is also an option for an icon badge, a “play-by-priority” option, and the app will now automatically adjust for quiet voices. Here’s the full breakdown of the new features:
    What’s New in Version 2.0
    – Streaming
    – Chapters
    – Storage management
    – Icon badge option
    – Play-by-priority option
    – Smart Speed now dynamically adjusts to quiet voices
    – Lots of bugs fixed, including playlist reordering and storage growth
    – Tons of little improvements and optimizations
Another noteworthy change with version 2.0 is the fact that all of these features are now free, as Overcast drops the “freemium” model and goes with a more donation-based system, where users can donate what they want if they determine they want to.
